From September 6 to 13, the street art festival ALL CAPS will take place in Lombardijen. International and Dutch artists will create eleven new murals throughout the neighbourhood. Residents will have a say in one of the artworks. The festival week will conclude on Sunday, September 13 with SUPER SUNDAY: a free day full of street art, music, workshops and activities in Spinozapark.
Under the theme I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD, ALL CAPS shows this year that change does not always have to start big. One wall, one street, or one story from the neighbourhood can already make a difference. After previous editions in, among others, Feijenoord and Beverwaard, this year Lombardijen is the focus. During the festival week, the neighbourhood gradually transforms into an open-air gallery. Visitors can watch artists at work and see how large blank walls are transformed into new artworks. The festival is free to visit all week.
Eleven new murals in Lombardijen
For the new artworks, an international group of street artists will come to Rotterdam. Among others, Hardthirteen from Indonesia, Stine Hvid from Denmark, and Filipe Grimaldi from Brazil are part of the programme. Rotterdam and Dutch artists are also represented, including Kalani Ware. Notably, residents of Lombardijen get a say in who will create one of the eleven murals. They can vote for artists and thus help determine which street art will be permanently visible in their neighbourhood.
Art that does more than just add colour
With ALL CAPS, the organisation does not only want to bring special art to the neighbourhood. Street art is also used to engage residents with their environment and give places a new appearance and identity. The theme I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD supports this: change, according to the organisation, starts close to home. By looking at public spaces together with residents and artists, places can become not only more colourful but also more a part of the community itself.
SUPER SUNDAY in Spinozapark
On Sunday, September 13, the festival week will be joyfully concluded with SUPER SUNDAY in Spinozapark. During this free festival day, residents and visitors can discover the new murals, see artists paint live, and get creatively involved themselves. There are among others street art and graffiti workshops for children, music, DJs, live acts, dance workshops, food trucks, and tours along the artworks in Lombardijen. This not only celebrates the end of the festival but also adds a series of new artworks to Lombardijen that will remain visible in the neighbourhood after this week.
