From September 6 to 13, the street art festival ALL CAPS takes place in Lombardijen. International and Dutch artists create eleven new murals spread throughout the neighborhood. Residents themselves have influence on one of the artworks. The festival week concludes on Sunday, September 13 with SUPER SUNDAY: a free day full of street art, music, workshops, and activities in Spinozapark.
Under the theme I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD, ALL CAPS shows this year that change does not always have to start big. One wall, one street, or one story from the neighborhood can already make a difference. After previous editions in, among others, Feijenoord and Beverwaard, Lombardijen is central this year. During the festival week, the neighborhood gradually transforms into an open-air gallery. Visitors can watch artists at work and follow how large blank walls are transformed into new artworks. The festival is free to visit all week.
Eleven new murals in Lombardijen
For the new artworks, an international group of street artists comes to Rotterdam. Among others, Hardthirteen from Indonesia, Stine Hvid from Denmark, and Filipe Grimaldi from Brazil are part of the program. Rotterdam and Dutch artists are also represented, including Kalani Ware. Remarkably, residents of Lombardijen get to have influence on who will create one of the eleven murals. They can vote on artists and thus help decide which street art will soon be permanently visible in their neighborhood.
Art that does more than just add color
With ALL CAPS, the organizers want to bring not only special art to the neighborhood. Street art is also used to involve residents with their surroundings and give places a new look and identity. The theme I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD fits this: change, according to the organizers, starts close to home. By looking at public spaces together with residents and artists, places can become not only more colorful but also more of a reflection of the neighborhood itself.
SUPER SUNDAY in Spinozapark
On Sunday, September 13, the festival week is festively concluded with SUPER SUNDAY in Spinozapark. During this free festival day, residents and visitors can discover the new murals, watch artists paint live, and get creative themselves. There are, among others, street art and graffiti workshops for children, music, DJs, live acts, dance workshops, food trucks, and tours along the artworks in Lombardijen. This not only celebrates the festival’s conclusion, but also adds a series of new artworks to Lombardijen that will remain visible in the neighborhood after this week.
