At the neighbors; Feijenoord district celebrates its 200th anniversary!

Hooray, Feijenoord is having a birthday! The neighborhood is exactly 200 years old this year. This will be extensively celebrated together with everyone who lives and works there. Until December, the area will be dedicated to pride, creativity, and neighborhood stories.

A unique ten-day program with a Ferris wheel and a festival tent at De Kaai is the highlight of the party from August 21 to 30, 2026. All Rotterdam residents are welcome to join the celebration. The year 1826 is a historic milestone. Exactly 200 years ago, the development of the then island Feijenoord as a residential area began. At the end of the 19th century, the city expanded further south of the Nieuwe Maas. Many homes were built for port workers. Feijenoord grew into a well-known working-class neighborhood. So 2026 is an anniversary year. To celebrate, there are all kinds of activities until the end of the year. From meetings and performances to walks through the neighborhood and workshops.

Festive program
De Kaai, the former Unilever site, is the central location for the program. From August 21 to 30, there will be a Ferris wheel and a festival tent here. Every day has a different theme. Such as cleaning up together, moving, reading, singing, dancing, and eating. Each day you can explore the area on foot with interesting guided tours or get an ice cream at the pop-up ice cream parlor in the Bridgekeeper’s House. Every evening you can enjoy local music and meals in the festival tent.

You can view the full program at www.wijkfeijenoord.nl.

Museum of the Future
In honor of the 200-year anniversary, the first Museum of the Future also opens. A neighborhood museum ‘on the street’ where stories from residents can be heard at various locations, such as in building entrances and community centers. And through headphones on the Ferris wheel! They share their memories and dreams for the neighborhood. This museum is never finished but grows along with the neighborhood, its residents, and new stories that emerge. The museum is an initiative of Stichting Wijkcollectie and will continue to exist after the celebration.
